Casares, a City With a Rich History

The white town of Casares, costa del sol, is set on a hilltop 435 meters above sea level and provides panoramic views of the Mediterranean sea. It is located around 100 kilometers from Malaga and less than 15 kilometers from the coast.

This lovely mountainous community in the Costa del Sol is a popular destination for history lovers. If you are a history fan looking to purchase a property for sale in Casares below is a glimpse of the municipality’s rich history and you can;t miss casares if you are looking for properties for sale in Spain

Casares served as both the Strait of Gibraltar’s and an entry point to Serranía de Ronda throughout the Middle Ages. As a result, it served as a cultural bastion of Al-Andalus and was crucial to the Almoravids’ territorial growth.

Julius Caesar is supposed to have been cured of liver disease in the spa of la Hedionda, located near the river Manilva, thanks to the sulfuric waters that still pour out of the surrounding spring due to this town’s rich history. As a result, Julius Caesar gave Casares the freedom to produce their coins across the Roman Empire.

The Pact of Casares, signed in 1361 by Peter I of Castile and the deposed Moorish King Muhammed V, allowed the Moorish King to reclaim his throne and gave Casares to the Nasrid dynasty. Following the fall of Ronda in 1485, the town submitted to Catholic forces and was given to Rodrigo Ponce de León, Duke of Cádiz. Rodrigo’s descendant, the Duke of Arcos, accepted the surrender of the rebel Moriscos on the site of the rustic parish church Iglesia de La Encarnacion, which was constructed in the 16th century.

The remnants of an Arab fortress, the church of Nuestra Senora de la Encarnación from the seventeenth century, the Iglesia de San Sebastián, the caverns of Ballesteros, the caves of Hedionda, and the Sima de Los Huesos stand out among Casares rich ancient sites.

Blas Infante, the creator of the Andalusian identity and the man behind the hymn and flag of this western region, was born and raised in Casares. On August 10, 1936, during the start of the Spanish Civil War, Blas Infante was slain. Locals honor Blas Infante annually on February 28 with a flower presentation and celebrate Andalusian nationalism.
